MUNZ & SIMONSEN | Japanese Taiko – Miya Daiko

Taiko originates from Japan, where its roots lie in spiritual rituals and millennia-old traditions. Thanks to the tours of Japanese Taiko groups such as Ondekoza, Kodo, Yamato or Tao, this fascinating type of drum play is becoming more and more well-known and popular within Europe as well.

The centrepieces of the instruments of each taiko group are barrel drums of different sizes, the so-called "Miya" or "Nagado." The corpus of Japanese taiko drums was traditionally whittled out of a tree segment of the Japanese Zelkova tree (related to the European Elm tree). This manufacturing process is very complex and takes a lot of time. In addition to that, trees with a suitable diameter have become rarer and more expensive. For this reason, even Japanese manufacturers are increasingly constructing the drum body out of individual staves.

We have cooperated with several taiko groups throughout the past years to develop Munz & Simonsen Taikos that are exceptionally durable and comparable to Japanese drums regarding their design, quality, and sound. We are exclusively using well-tested high quality materials from Germany, which are expertly and carefully assembled in our manufactory.

Our Taikos are made from Elm wood segments that are glued tension-free. "Tension-free" means that the individual segments of the drum body are cut out of a massive wood board with a band saw, with the segment shape following the outline of the finalized drum. These segments are then cut in a perfect fitting angle with a circular saw. Thus, the drum body becomes so stable that it doesn't need any additional metal bands for stabilization.

Once all segments have been cut, they are assembled to form the raw drum body and glued in shape. This raw drum body is then turned on the lathe. Thus, the drum body obtains a perfectly round shape, and the edge of the taiko drum body can be precisely profiled. This allows us to achieve drum body diameters of 160 cm (about 63") and more at our lathes.

Each Munz & Simonsen Drum is an individual and unique item that will provide you many years of joy, even if you use it every single day.

Drum Body |

The drum body of our Taikos consists of carefully selected Elm wood segments that are glued tension-free. The surface, which is oiled or stained in Japanese-red, beautifully showcases the natural grain of the massive staves.

Drum Skins |

Our drum skins are sourced from local Rotbunter Allgäuer Rinder cows.

These skins are so robust that they can withstand even the most intense, professional usage for many years.

Fittings |

The drum skins of Japanese Miyas are traditionally nailed to the drum body. With our tuneable Miyas, we have developed an alternative type of drum skin fitting that is becoming more and more popular in the taiko community.

Drum Stands |

We are offering drum stands made of wood and metal in several different sizes and shapes and other customization options.

Here you will get an overview of our taiko drum stands...

Drum Sticks - Bachi |

Drum sticks are put under a lot of stress while playing Taiko. This is why only few types of wood are suitable. The stick ends are rounded and the wood is carefully smoothed. More about Drum Sticks...

Bags |

We are offering Shime Bags and special wrapping bags suitable for the transport of Miyas.

For smaller Okedos and Miyas, we are also offering bagpacks.

Our default sizes for Miya Daikos are drum skin diameters of 42 cm (~ 16.5"), 47 cm (~ 18.5") and 52 cm (~ 20.5"). We are also offering other sizes on request. Additionally, you can order your drums stained in Japanese red and equipped with special drum handles that do not rattle during play. Please give us a call, we will gladly provide you with advice.
