With our selection of high-quality drum body work pieces made from Elmwood in different stages of completion, we want to offer dedicated taiko self-builders an attractive alternative to coopered wine barrels. The carefully selected wood for our drum bodies has been artificially dried. The segments – in contrast to the cooper technique - are cut in curved shape using a band saw and glued to one another without applying tension. This guarantees that the drums do not get any cracks in centrally heated rooms later on. The thickness of the individual segments is matched to the drum size and lies between 35 and 40 mm. Turning the drum bodies on the lathe yields a perfectly circular drum skin surface with an even rim.
Taiko Drum Body Construction
Our manufactory is available for special taiko drum body construction workshops. If you are able to gather at least five workshop participants, we can arrange a date where we will exclusively produce any desired number of taiko drum bodies. You can then stretch the drum skins at your own leisure at home. See also: Taiko Construction Workshops »
Taiko drums can be rather heavy and may need to be carried by several people. This is why larger Taikos often have carrying handles, which are often elaborately decorated in Japan. We have developed our own kind of carrying handles, whose simple design and high quality matches our other drums.
Exclusively available at Munz & Simonsen: Taiko carrying handles with anti-rattling mechanics.
Each taiko player knows the problem: the strong vibrations created while beating the drum cause the carrying handles to rattle and produce annoying noise. Wrapping the handles with cloth or tape to mask the rattling sound is bothersome and does not improve the looks of the drum. The Munz & Simonsen carrying handles feature small polyamide pins that are pressed against the handle ring by a spring. This mechanic – which is hidden from plain sight – keeps the carrying handles movable but prevents them from making any rattling noises.
Our nails have a head diameter of 20 mm and a matte black surface.
