The most impressive showpiece of each taikogroup is the big "O Daiko" that can have a diameter of over two meters. Like the MiyaDaiko, they are traditionally made from one single tree segment and they can weigh several hundred kilograms. For this reason, O Daikos (also referred to as Odaikos) are not only prohibitively expensive for most groups, but also impossible to handle due to their size and weight. The drumskin is nailed to the body, which makes the transport and usage at different locations and different temperatures rather difficult. We constructed an Odaiko out of Elm wood segments with a drumskin diameter of 1,80 m and a drumbody depth of 1 m for the taikogroupMasaDaiko from Bremen. Thanks to the specially developed fittings it is equipped with, the drum can be easilytuned – despite its size.
The form and composition of the JapaneseO Daiko has been developed from the KoreanBukdrum, which we have been building in different sizes in years. Our Buks have the advantage over taikodrums that their drumskins can be tuned with our tuneablefitting. This is why more and more European taikoplayers prefer the Munz & Simonsentuneable construction method, which differs from the Japanese original.
We are also offering O Daikobuildingworkshops for drumminggroups.
