We have been cooperating with the excellent percussionist Christoph Kissel for many years – here at a recording session with our Munz & Simonsen Congas.
In order to be able to perceive the sound of the congas adequately, we recommend listening to the sound samples with a good music system or headphones.

"The Congas of Munz & Simonsen look not only beautiful. Each of my drums has a very personal but always round and warm sound, and in the set, the three fit together like a trio. Wood, skins and hardware are of outstanding quality, and hands and ears make me feel every time and hear that craftsmen work with expertise and love the instrument. "
Testreport von Tom Schäfer, Heft 01|99, Fachmagazin Sticks
Quite in line with the Cuban models here are noble instruments, which are not customary in the local Conga market in Germany, more precisely in Oetzen in the Lüneburger Heide (Note: After a move, the carpentry is now Located in Uelzen. All components and details are expertly crafted in the Kai Simonsen carpentry workshop. There are therefore no assembly line products, also hardware parts (Gerhard Munz) and skins are from a careful selection. This is why we offer small quantities of these unique drums, which are produced with great care and commitment, a stylish result of many years of experience and in the sizes 12 1/2 "Tumba, 11 1/2" Conga, 10 1/2 "Quinto and 9 1/2 "Super Quinto will be offered
Boilers | The massive boilers (standard), which measure 75 cm in height, are glued from individual shrubs (elms). However, there is no sandwich construction as is often used in the industry, since the approximately 4 cm to 5 cm wide and approx. 15 mm thick elm plates are shaped sawn, ie they are massively worked. Already during the cutting of the Daub segments, the bell-shaped boiler shape is worked out, so that the individual elements form a resonant body, which provides a solid stability with a very robust design. Therefore, boiler rings can be largely dispensed with. Only one element can be found on the base of the boiler, which is placed as a folded and bolted metal strip in a flat boiler opening. The Conga foot is flat, so that the boiler is not protected by ground contact; So here is a little more careful handling announced.
All outer surfaces of the boilers are turned off and smooth ground, the wood on the inside is visible. An applied oil (outside) protects against weather influences and gives the developed wood grain a distinct depth of sharpness. In this "natural-optical" shape, one also recognizes that the individual Daub segments have been sorted according to the visible pattern of grain and have been glued together after the numbering of the wood segments, so that a decorative unit is formed.
If you look at the edges of the fairing, you can see a pronounced round ground joint, the inside edge of the rim of the boiler is steeply bent. This smooth round profile provides good conditions for a smooth fur motion during the clamping process. The entire wood processing is subject to the best craftsmanship.
Mechanics | Here, too, one has thought and presents solid material with black-bronzed metal fittings. The clamping ring measures 5 mm x 20 mm and is equipped with six welded 8 mm clamping loops on all models. The hooks are also of a thickness of 8 mm, so-called high-strength clamping nuts, instead of standard washers, engage on conical pan washers which match the respective angle of the clamping hooks. A good idea, with which one saves common distance profile discs. Unlike the usual, the triangular brackets are attached. For example, the triple-anchored boiler anchorage has been optimally placed according to the upward-acting clamping forces (two screw points at the bottom, one at the top). Great!
Alle mechanischen Bauteile überzeugen in ihrer robusten und durchdachten Bauweise. Ebenso waren funktional vorbildliche Felljustierungen festzustellen.
Skins | In the fur stocking, you can access self-processed Allgäuer beef skins, which offer a purely optically pleasant picture in exquisite selection and flawless processing. The hides are finely dehaired and in fact smoothed on the playing surface. This results in an unusually soft feel, although the skins have a relatively rigid structure due to their comparatively strong (2 mm to 3 mm) thickness. The skins can be sensitively tuned, which can be attributed, on the one hand, to the high quality of the hides, on the other hand to the supple smoothly worked rims. In view of the strong diaphragm, a pressureful, dry sound can be expected.
Sound | If you have already been able to discover special architectural features within the framework of the design, the sound also has an overwhelmingly distinctive image in the form of a dry sound. The dry character is particularly pronounced. So you have to "go" with the strong skins, in order to achieve a result of sound development, which is surely easy for the skilled hand, but the beginner can face problems. To this extent, the target group of these high-quality processed and charismatic-sounding drums (as well as price orientation) are also included.
The Conga presents warm and round sounding open tones with clear attack moments with a very tight sustain. An abrupt but softly braked open sound clarifies the dry characteristic, only a slightly resonant overtone behavior remains a bit longer audible. With brettharten slaps characterized accentuated beats in the form of concise but not too sharp sounds. On the other hand, heel beat beats are very mild, but they also require a re-emphasis to be placed in a tonally and harmoniously coherent picture between open tones and slaps.
Open, because resonant, the tumba sounds. With bearing, warm and deep sounds, this drum reacts relatively spontaneously with balanced beat sounds. "Dust-drying", on the other hand, the two small models Quinto and Super Quinto show their exemplary relationship to the percussive "super-dry sound". The wooden sound features are very distinctive with very tight, but tonally strong open sounds and precise short slaps. There was also a convincing mood variability, thus the Munz & Simonsen models also offer good conditions for studios.
Conclusion | Handmade in Germany: The small series of excellently processed Congas (massive Ulm doves) show exclusivity in harmonious harmony between unikater woodworking, functionally thought out hardware concept, exquisite beeffellows and a sound that is straight, clear, warm, wooden and incredibly dry. In this orientation, Munz & Simonsen Congas (Tumba, Conga, Quinto and Super Quinto) as professionally orientated instruments for the percussionist with high demand.
